Overview

Enteric neurons are the functional nerve cells of the enteric nervous system (ENS), an extensive network within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They control motility, secretion, blood flow, and immunological defense. Classified into IPANs, interneurons, and motor neurons, they use various neurotransmitters like acetylcholine, dopamine, serotonin, nitric oxide, and VIP. Electrophysiologically, they are categorized as S-neurons or AH-neurons. The ENS communicates bidirectionally with the central and autonomic nervous systems, coordinating digestive reflexes. Their function is closely integrated with enteric glial cells, macrophages, interstitial cells of Cajal, and enteroendocrine cells. Enteric neurons are targets for understanding and treating GI disorders.
