Overview

Enteric pathogen" refers to any microorganism—bacterial, viral, or parasitic—that is capable of causing disease in the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly through oral-fecal transmission, and is associated with symptoms such as diarrhea, malabsorption, and intestinal inflammation[1][5][3]. Common bacterial enteric pathogens include Salmonella, pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli), Shigella, Campylobacter, and Vibrio species[2][3][7][10]. Some enteric pathogens act via invasion of the intestinal epithelial barrier, secretion of toxins, or triggering of inflammation, and are a major cause of global foodborne diseases and childhood morbidity[1][9]. In summary, "Enteric pathogen" is not a canonical drug target or specific molecular entity but a general term for microbes that infect the GI tract. For structured information, a more precise target (such as specific bacterial toxins, virulence factors, or microbial receptors) should be specified instead.
