Overview

Enteric viruses are a diverse group of pathogens that primarily replicate in the gastrointestinal tract and are typically transmitted via the fecal-oral route (1.3.1, 1.3.3). This category encompasses several major viral families, including Reoviridae (Rotavirus), Caliciviridae (Norovirus, Sapovirus), Astroviridae (Astrovirus), Adenoviridae (Enteric Adenoviruses), and Picornaviridae (Enteroviruses such as Poliovirus and Hepatitis A) (1.3.2, 1.3.4). They are a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, particularly in children, and can also lead to severe systemic conditions including hepatitis, meningitis, and paralysis (1.3.3, 1.3.5). Therapeutic strategies focus on inhibiting viral replication through targets like RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and viral proteases, or preventing entry via capsid binders (1.4.1, 1.4.5). While effective vaccines exist for pathogens like Rotavirus and Poliovirus, many enteric infections currently lack specific approved antivirals and are managed with supportive care (1.4.2, 1.4.4).
