Enteric viruses are a diverse group of pathogens, including Rotavirus, Norovirus, Astrovirus, and Sapovirus, that primarily infect the human gastrointestinal tract (CDC, 2023). These viruses are typically transmitted via the fecal-oral route and replicate within the intestinal epithelium, causing symptoms such as acute diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain (NIH, 2022). In the gastrointestinal lumen, these viruses interact with host cell receptors to initiate infection or are targeted by therapeutic agents designed to neutralize or sequester them. Therapeutic strategies include the use of adsorbents like Diosmectite to bind viral particles and prevent epithelial attachment, as well as small-molecule antivirals like Nitazoxanide that inhibit viral replication (PubMed, 2021). Vaccines, such as those for Rotavirus, are also critical for inducing mucosal immunity to prevent infection (WHO, 2023). Because this target refers to a broad class of pathogens rather than a single molecule, treatment and prevention strategies must be tailored to the specific viral agent involved. Managing these infections is vital for global health, as they are a major cause of childhood mortality in developing regions (StatPearls, 2023).
Therapeutic strategies involve the inhibition of viral replication (e.g., Nitazoxanide), physical adsorption and sequestration of viral particles in the gut lumen (e.g., Diosmectite), and the induction of neutralizing antibodies through vaccination (e.g., Rotavirus vaccine).
