Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis)

Target
E. faecalis
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Gram-positive bacterium, Opportunistic pathogen
01

Overview

Enterococcus faecalis is a Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic bacterium commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. While typically harmless, it can become an opportunistic pathogen causing serious infections such as bacteremia, endocarditis, and UTIs, especially in immunocompromised individuals. Its virulence factors include adhesins, cytolysin, biofilm formation, and gelatinase. Notably, E. faecalis exhibits resistance to many antibiotics, complicating treatment. It can also interfere with L-DOPA metabolism.
