Enterotoxigenic *Escherichia coli* (ETEC) is a pathotype of *E. coli* and one of the leading bacterial causes of diarrhea worldwide, especially in children in low-income countries and in travelers. ETEC is defined by its ability to produce heat-labile (LT) and/or heat-stable (ST) enterotoxins, which stimulate intestinal secretion of water and electrolytes, leading to watery diarrhea. ETEC also expresses a variety of colonization factors (fimbriae), facilitating attachment to the small intestinal mucosa. While not a single molecular target, ETEC's toxins and colonization antigens are being investigated as vaccine and drug targets[1][3][9][7][8].
