Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Colonization Factor Antigen CS5

Molecular classification
Fimbrial protein, Colonization Factor, CFA/IV family
01

Overview

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) Colonization Factor CS5 is a fimbrial surface structure that mediates the adherence of ETEC to the intestinal mucosa, facilitating colonization and subsequent toxin delivery. It is a key virulence factor in ETEC-induced diarrhea, particularly in children in low- and middle-income countries and travelers. CS5 belongs to the CFA/IV family and is often found together with other CFs such as CS6 or CS4. It is a target for vaccine development.
