Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) is a major virulence factor produced by ETEC, a leading cause of diarrheal disease. LT is an AB5 toxin that binds to ganglioside GM1 via its B subunits and delivers the A subunit into host cells. The A subunit ADP-ribosylates Gsα, leading to increased cAMP levels and fluid secretion in the gut.
ADP-ribosylates Gsα proteins, constitutively activating adenylate cyclase, raising intracellular cAMP levels, stimulating chloride ion secretion and inhibiting sodium absorption, leading to water efflux into the intestinal lumen and diarrhea.
