Overview

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is a highly transmissible neurotropic enterovirus responsible for hand-foot-and-mouth disease epidemics globally—especially among young children—and can cause rare but serious neurological complications. Its structure consists of a small RNA genome encoding both structural capsid proteins critical for host cell attachment/invasion via specific receptors like SCARB2. While effective vaccines exist only regionally so far—and no targeted antivirals are available—ongoing research continues toward broader prevention strategies worldwide.
