Overview

Enterovirus A71 structural proteins are four viral proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4) that assemble to form the icosahedral capsid of Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71), a member of the Picornaviridae family[1][2][3][5][6]. These proteins result from cleavage of the P1 polyprotein precursor and form a single protomer; five protomers make a pentamer, and 12 pentamers constitute a complete viral capsid. VP1, VP2, and VP3 are exposed on the virion surface and are involved in binding host cell receptors and are the main targets of neutralizing antibodies. VP4 is located internally, lining the inner capsid surface. Drugs and vaccines targeting these structural proteins, especially VP1, are major approaches for antiviral intervention and immunization against EV-A71, which is responsible for outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease and serious neurological disease in children[1][3][5].
