Overview

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is a non-enveloped, icosahedral virus belonging to the family Picornaviridae. The viral particle measures approximately 20–30 nm in diameter and contains a single-stranded positive-sense RNA genome. The capsid is composed of VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4 proteins. VP1 is a major immunodominant protein and key for entry. The virus uses receptors like SCARB2 and PSGL-1 to enter host cells. EV-A71 causes hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and can lead to severe neurological complications. Inactivated vaccines have been developed, but no specific antiviral drugs are approved.
