Envelope glycoprotein 120 (gp120) is a surface-exposed glycoprotein found on the envelope of HIV-1. It is essential for viral entry into host cells, mediating attachment to CD4 receptors and co-receptors (CCR5 or CXCR4) on target cells. Gp120's high variability and extensive glycosylation shield conserved functional sites from neutralizing antibodies, making it a challenging but crucial vaccine target.
