The envelope glycoprotein gp140 is a recombinant, soluble form of the HIV-1 envelope spike protein. It is derived from the precursor polyprotein gp160, which is cleaved into gp120 and gp41. Gp140 consists of gp120 covalently linked to most or all of the ectodomain portion of gp41, lacking the transmembrane and cytoplasmic regions. It mediates viral entry by binding to CD4 receptors and coreceptors, triggering membrane fusion. Gp140 is a major target for neutralizing antibodies and is used as a candidate immunogen in vaccine studies.
