Environmental pH is a physical–chemical parameter describing the concentration of hydrogen ions in water, soil, or an organism's immediate environment. It is used to define how acidic or basic a solution or compartment is on a scale of 0 (strongly acidic) to 14 (strongly alkaline), with 7 as neutral[3][5][9]. Environmental pH is not a molecule, protein, or receptor, but rather a measured value that profoundly influences chemical reactions, biological processes, and species distribution[1][2][7][8]. Changes in environmental pH affect solubility and toxicity of chemicals, activity of enzymes and proteins, and metabolic rates in microbes and multicellular organisms. While not a therapeutic target in the sense of a molecular entity, pH measurement is crucial in assessing environmental health and monitoring ecosystem changes, pollution, or stress impacts[1][2][3][5][8]. Note: "Environmental pH" is not a canonical therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter), nor is it a molecule or protein. It is a measured property of an environment, and for target-based research, it should not be considered a molecular target.
