Enzyme

Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

An enzyme is a biological catalyst, typically a protein (though some RNA molecules can also act as enzymes), that accelerates chemical reactions in living organisms without being consumed or permanently altered in the process. Enzymes are essential for virtually all metabolic processes, enabling reactions to occur at rates sufficient to sustain life. They are involved in critical physiological processes such as respiration, digestion, DNA replication, detoxification, muscle contraction, and nerve function. Each cell contains thousands of different enzymes; each enzyme is specific to a particular reaction or type of reaction due to its unique structure and active site.

02

Mechanism of action

Varies greatly depending on the specific enzyme and drug interaction. Common mechanisms include competitive inhibition, non-competitive inhibition, allosteric modulation, and irreversible inhibition.

03

Biological functions

CatalysisMetabolismRespirationDigestionDNA replicationDetoxificationMuscle contractionNerve function
04

Disease associations

Many diseases, depending on the specific enzyme affected. Examples include metabolic disorders, enzyme deficiencies, and cancers where specific enzymes are dysregulated.
05

Safety considerations

Drug-induced enzyme inhibition can lead to drug-drug interactions and adverse effects. Enzyme deficiencies can cause metabolic disorders. Some enzyme inhibitors can be toxic.
06

Interacting drugs

Many drugs, depending on the specific enzyme. Examples include enzyme inhibitors and activators.
07

Biomarkers

Specific enzyme levels can be biomarkers for disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response. Examples include liver enzymes for liver damage and cardiac enzymes for myocardial infarction.
