Overview

EPB41L1 antisense RNA 1 (EPB41L1-AS1, AL121895.1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the EPB41L1 gene. Unlike protein-coding genes or classical therapeutic targets such as receptors or enzymes, EPB41L1-AS1 functions in regulatory mechanisms, acting in cis to influence expression of EPB41L1 and neighboring genes. It interacts with chromatin markers and nuclear proteins, notably affecting the SUB1 transcription factor. EPB41L1-AS1 is not currently considered a classical drug target, and there are no reported pharmacological agents acting directly on it. Most available research focuses on its regulatory and nuclear functions[4]. Critical note: There is no evidence that EPB41L1-AS1 is a direct therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme), and its information must be carefully distinguished from the protein-coding gene EPB41L1[4]. The latter is involved in cell adhesion, neural signaling, and cancer progression, but EPB41L1-AS1 is a long noncoding RNA that regulates gene expression nearby. If structured information for a therapeutic target is needed, EPB41L1 (protein 4.1N) should be considered instead[1][3][4].
