EPHA1 antisense RNA 1 (EPHA1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the EPHA1 gene region. It does not encode a protein but is thought to play a regulatory role in controlling the expression of the EPHA1 gene, which encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase involved in developmental processes, especially in the nervous system[1][7]. Polymorphisms within or near the EPHA1-AS1 locus have been linked to altered risk for neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases, such as intellectual disability and Alzheimer’s disease, likely by modulating either EPHA1 expression or affecting the activity of pathways like JAK2/STAT3 signaling[1][3][5]. Because it is a regulatory RNA and not a protein, EPHA1-AS1 is not itself a traditional drug target (such as a receptor or enzyme), but certain SNPs in its region may serve as genetic biomarkers for disease risk or prognosis[1][3][7].
