Overview

Ephrin type-A receptor 1 (EPHA1) is a receptor tyrosine kinase that binds to membrane-bound ephrin-A ligands on adjacent cells, mediating contact-dependent bidirectional signaling. It plays roles in cell proliferation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, cell adhesion, cell migration, tissue boundary formation, axon guidance, and long-term potentiation. EPHA1 is implicated in carcinogenesis and may act as a tumor suppressor. Its expression pattern makes it relevant for biomarker research related to inflammation or cancer progression.

Mechanism of action

Activation by ephrin-A ligands induces cell attachment to the extracellular matrix while inhibiting cell spreading and motility via regulation of ILK, RHOA, and RAC pathways. Initiates forward signaling cascades and induces reverse signaling, regulating cytoskeletal dynamics via small GTPases such as RHOA/RAC.
