The epidermal cell desmosomal plaque is a specialized, electron-dense structure located on the cytoplasmic side of desmosomes. It serves as a critical anchoring site for intermediate filaments (primarily keratins), providing mechanical strength and integrity to tissues that experience significant physical stress. The plaque is composed of an outer dense plaque (ODP), containing plakoglobin and plakophilin which link cadherins to the inner plaque, and an inner dense plaque (IDP), primarily consisting of desmoplakin, which tethers intermediate filaments to the junction.
