Overview

Epidermal hyperplasia refers to an increase in the number of cells (especially spinous keratinocytes) in the viable epidermis, resulting in a thickened epidermal layer[1][5]. It is most commonly used as a synonym for acanthosis in dermatopathology, and may occur as an adaptive response to chronic irritation, inflammation, or underlying diseases, such as eczema and preneoplastic lesions[1][3][5]. Microscopically, cells appear normal but are increased in number; distinct from hypertrophy, which involves an increase in cell size[3]. Not a single molecular entity or drug target, but rather a sign of various underlying pathologies, both benign and malignant.
