Epidermal Lipid Matrix (ELM)

Target
ELM
Molecular classification
Lipid mixture, Extracellular matrix component
01

Overview

The epidermal lipid matrix is a highly organized, hydrophobic structure located in the stratum corneum (SC), filling the spaces between corneocytes. It is composed primarily of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids, arranged in lamellar layers. This matrix functions as a critical barrier, preventing excessive water loss and blocking the entry of external substances. Disruptions in lipid composition and organization are associated with impaired barrier function and various skin disorders.

Mechanism of action

Topical application aims to replenish deficient lipids, restore lamellar structure, and improve barrier function. Some formulations stimulate endogenous lipid synthesis.
