Target intelligence / Profile preview

Epidermal moisture retention

01

Overview

Epidermal moisture retention is a complex physiological process crucial for maintaining skin hydration and barrier function, rather than a specific molecular target or receptor. It involves a coordinated interplay of multiple molecular components and mechanisms within the epidermis. Key elements include Aquaporin 3 (AQP3) for water and glycerol transport in keratinocytes, Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF) within corneocytes, endogenous glycerol, hyaluronic acid in the epidermis, the lipid barrier of the stratum corneum preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and tight junction structures between the stratum granulosum and stratum corneum. Because it is a process, it is not considered a direct therapeutic target. For therapeutic intervention related to skin hydration, individual molecular components such as Aquaporin 3 would be more suitable targets.
