Overview

Epidermal structures refer to the stratified squamous epithelium of the skin and its associated appendages, including hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands (StatPearls, 2023). These structures function collectively to provide a physical and chemical barrier against environmental insults, regulate body temperature, and facilitate sensory perception (NIH, 2022). In a clinical context, these structures are the site of numerous pathologies, including inflammatory disorders like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, as well as adnexal diseases like acne vulgaris (PubMed, 2021). While many pharmacological agents, including retinoids and corticosteroids, are applied topically to treat these conditions, Epidermal structures itself is a broad histological category rather than a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme. Therapeutic interventions usually target specific proteins or signaling pathways within these structures, such as keratinocyte-derived cytokines or androgen receptors in sebaceous glands. Because this term encompasses a wide variety of cell types and signaling pathways, it does not represent a single druggable protein or receptor. Consequently, for drug discovery purposes, it is more accurate to identify specific molecular targets within the skin rather than the tissue structures as a whole.
