Epididymal protein is a broad and generic category referring to the entire collection of proteins secreted by or expressed in the epididymis tissue, rather than a single, specific molecular target. The human epididymis expresses approximately 65% of all human proteins, with 313 showing elevated expression specific to the epididymis, and 1,371 proteins predominantly expressed there. These proteins serve crucial functions in sperm maturation, protection, nutrient provision, and immune responses. Functionally, they are involved in processes such as cell adhesion, epithelial cell differentiation, protein localization, lipid metabolism, catabolism, cell motility regulation, proteolysis, and response to oxidative stress. Due to its highly generic nature, "Epididymal protein" is not considered a specific therapeutic target. To define a target, a particular epididymal protein (e.g., EPPIN, MMSDH, NDUFS1) would need to be specified.
