Overview

Epigenetic modification refers to chemical changes that regulate gene expression without altering the DNA sequence itself[4][7]. Typical modifications include DNA methylation, histone acetylation, phosphorylation, and the action of non-coding RNAs[1][10]. These changes allow for dynamic control of gene transcription, influencing cell differentiation, development, adaptation to environmental signals, and disease processes[1][4][7]. Abnormal epigenetic modifications are implicated in varied conditions, notably cancer, and are the basis for a growing class of therapeutic interventions such as DNA methyltransferase and histone deacetylase inhibitors[2][5][6][8]. However, "epigenetic modification" is a process, not a discreet molecule or drug target.
