Epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a thin, fibrocellular layer of scar tissue that develops on the inner surface of the retina, most often over the central macular region[1][2][4][5][6]. It is usually associated with aging and posterior vitreous detachment, but may also occur after retinal surgery, inflammation, vascular disease, or trauma[3][4][5][6]. ERMs can cause painless vision distortion and blurring, where straight lines appear wavy (metamorphopsia) and central vision may be impaired[3][5][7]. Most cases are mild and do not require intervention; if vision is significantly impaired, the membrane can be removed surgically (vitrectomy and membrane peel). There are no effective drug treatments for ERM[1][2][3][4][5][6].
