The epithelial basement membrane is a specialized structural extracellular matrix (ECM) component, not a discrete molecular entity or traditional therapeutic target. It is a layered cell-adherent extracellular matrix that forms part of tissue architecture, composed of multiple protein components including laminin, type IV collagen, nidogen, and proteoglycans. It provides structural support, establishes cell polarity, serves as a permeability barrier, and mediates cell signaling.
