Epithelial cell apoptosis process

Molecular classification
Other (biological process, not a molecular classification)
01

Overview

Epithelial cell apoptosis is a regulated cellular process vital for removing unneeded, damaged, or potentially dangerous epithelial cells. It involves two main molecular pathways: the intrinsic (mitochondrial) pathway, regulated by Bcl-2 family proteins, and the extrinsic (death receptor) pathway, mediated by receptors such as Fas and TNF receptors. Execution of apoptosis in epithelial tissues is essential for maintaining tissue integrity—dying epithelial cells signal neighbors to promote their extrusion and preserve barrier function. Dysregulation of this process is linked to disease: excessive apoptosis can lead to tissue breakdown, while defective apoptosis enables tumor development.
