Epithelial lining cells are a highly heterogeneous cell type found throughout the body, covering surfaces, lining cavities, and forming the functional lining of organs such as the skin, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, and genitourinary system. They are classified according to cell shape (squamous, cuboidal, columnar), number of layers (simple, stratified, pseudostratified, transitional), and location. Their primary functions include protecting underlying tissue from mechanical stress, pathogens, toxins, and dehydration; absorbing nutrients and water; secreting substances like mucus and enzymes; sensation; and participating in innate immune responses. They are involved in multiple physiological and pathological processes (e.g., cancer, inflammation, tissue regeneration), but "epithelial lining cell" as a term is not a targetable molecule, protein, or receptor, making it inappropriate for use as a drug target in biomedical databases.
