Overview

Epithelial Mucin 1 (MUC1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on the apical surface of most glandular and ductal epithelial cells. It plays a protective role by forming a physical barrier against pathogens and environmental stressors. MUC1 is often overexpressed or aberrantly glycosylated in various cancers, where it promotes tumor growth, invasion, metastasis, and immune evasion. The cytoplasmic tail of MUC1 mediates cell signaling, regulating proliferation, adhesion, motility, and survival.
