Overview

Epithelial-origin cancer cells, or carcinoma cells, are malignant cells derived from epithelial tissues, which line the body's surfaces and organs (National Cancer Institute). They represent the most common type of cancer, accounting for approximately 80-90% of all cases (NIH). These cells are characterized by biological processes such as the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which allows them to gain migratory and invasive properties necessary for metastasis (PubMed: 29476153). While not a single molecular target, they are often identified and targeted via specific surface markers like Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule (EpCAM) or through overexpressed signaling receptors like the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) (StatPearls). Therapeutic intervention typically involves cytotoxic chemotherapy or targeted monoclonal antibodies designed to induce apoptosis or inhibit proliferative signaling pathways (PubMed: 30214644). However, a major challenge in targeting these cells is the potential for off-target toxicity to healthy epithelial tissues, such as the skin and gastrointestinal lining (NIH).
