Overview

Epithelialization is the critical repair process by which epithelial cells (primarily keratinocytes in skin) migrate, proliferate, and differentiate to restore the covering over a wound or denuded area, reestablishing the primary barrier between the body and the environment. It is essential for wound closure and restoration of skin function. The process involves cell signaling, migration, proliferation, and subsequent differentiation, coordinated through various growth factors (e.g., EGF, TGF-β, cytokines), cellular interactions, and extracellular matrix components. Dysregulation leads to poor healing, chronic wounds, or excessive scar formation. Interventions to promote epithelialization include advanced dressings, growth factors, and biological scaffolds, but epithelialization itself is not a discrete molecular target for drug interaction.
