Overview

EPN2 antisense RNA 1 (EPN2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the EPN2 gene locus[5]. It does not encode a protein but likely functions via regulation of the sense EPN2 transcript or through local chromatin modification, similar to other naturally occurring antisense RNAs[1][3]. These types of RNAs are increasingly recognized for their roles in gene regulation at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels, influencing cellular processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and disease states, particularly cancer[1][3]. Disease associations such as cerebellar liponeurocytoma and posterior fossa group A ependymoma have been noted for EPN2-AS1 in RNA gene databases[5]; however, the primary understanding is inferred from broader roles of antisense RNAs and long non-coding RNAs, since few direct functional studies exist. There are currently no known drugs targeting EPN2-AS1, nor is it used as a clinical biomarker, but lncRNAs of this class are of active research interest for potential future cancer diagnostics and therapies[6].
