EPS15 antisense RNA 1 (EPS15-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the protein-coding gene EPS15. It acts mainly by binding to, and repressing, the expression of sense EPS15, a component of the EGFR signaling pathway involved in cancer cell proliferation and invasion. EPS15-AS1 is downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma, and its overexpression inhibits cell proliferation, promotes apoptosis, and induces ferroptosis (iron-dependent cell death) by suppressing EPS15 and the redox regulator AKR1B1. Experimental evidence suggests EPS15-AS1 as a potential therapeutic target in liver cancer, with possible applications in reversing drug resistance or halting tumor progression. It is not a traditional protein- or peptide-based receptor, enzyme, transporter, or channel, but is a regulatory noncoding RNA with disease-modifying properties in cancer biology[1][3][4].
