Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) envelope glycoprotein gp220 is one of the two major outer envelope glycoproteins of EBV, along with gp350. Both proteins, often referred to as the "gp350/220" complex, are products of alternative splicing from the same primary RNA transcript and share significant sequence identity. Gp220 mediates high-affinity binding to complement receptor type 2 (CR2/CD21) on B lymphocytes, which is essential for EBV attachment and entry into B cells. This interaction is a major target for vaccine development and ligand-receptor blockade strategies.
