Overview

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-infected B cells are human B lymphocytes that have been targeted and infected by the Epstein-Barr virus. The primary cellular targets for EBV in humans are B cells due to their expression of specific surface receptors required for viral entry, primarily CD21. EBV establishes different latency programs within infected B cells, allowing for lifelong persistence while minimizing immune detection. While most infections are asymptomatic due to effective immune control, persistent infection can contribute to various malignancies.
