Overview

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-infected cells are host cells—primarily B lymphocytes, but also T cells, NK cells, and epithelial cells—that harbor the EBV genome. EBV establishes either a lytic or latent infection in these host cells. In latency, EBV persists as an episome within the nucleus and expresses specific viral proteins and RNAs that modulate cell behavior and immune evasion. EBV-infected cells can give rise to various malignancies and other diseases.
