Solute Carrier Family 29 Member 1 (SLC29A1)

Target
SLC29A1
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute Carrier Family

Overview

Solute carrier family 29 member 1 (SLC29A1), also known as Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter 1 (ENT1), is a transmembrane glycoprotein that mediates the cellular uptake of nucleosides across plasma and mitochondrial membranes. It is a key member of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family, facilitating sodium-independent transport of nucleosides such as adenosine, guanosine, inosine, uridine, and thymidine. ENT1 plays critical roles in the uptake of physiological nucleosides, cellular uptake of cytotoxic nucleoside analogs used in cancer chemotherapy or antiviral therapy, and modulation of extracellular adenosine concentrations. Mutations or variants in SLC29A1/ENT1 are associated with H syndrome, pigmented hypertrichosis with insulin-dependent diabetes, Faisalabad histiocytosis, and Augustine blood group system related hemolytic reactions.
