Overview

Equine collagen is a xenogenic structural protein, primarily Type I, harvested from equine tissues such as Achilles tendons or skin for use in medical applications (PMID: 22403971). It is not a traditional therapeutic target but rather a bioactive material used in wound management and surgical hemostasis (PMID: 25831710). When applied to a wound site, it mimics the natural extracellular matrix, facilitating the migration of fibroblasts and promoting the formation of granulation tissue (PMID: 15603977). Furthermore, it acts as a potent hemostatic agent by triggering platelet adhesion and activation via receptors like Glycoprotein VI, which leads to the release of coagulation factors and the formation of a stable clot (PMID: 17215330). Clinical products often combine equine collagen with other agents, such as thrombin or antibiotics like gentamicin, to enhance its therapeutic efficacy in complex surgical environments (PMID: 11759900). While generally biocompatible, its use carries a risk of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions in individuals sensitized to equine proteins (PMID: 11759900).

Mechanism of action
