Ergosterol is a sterol molecule found in the cell membranes of fungi and some protozoa, serving as a structural component analogous to cholesterol in animal cells. It regulates membrane fluidity and permeability and is a target for antifungal drugs. Ergosterol can also act as a microbe-associated molecular pattern, triggering immune responses. It is also a precursor to vitamin D2.
Azoles inhibit enzymes involved in ergosterol synthesis. Polyenes bind directly to ergosterol, disrupting membrane integrity.
