Ergosterol Biosynthesis Enzyme

Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

Ergosterol biosynthesis enzymes are a group of proteins responsible for the multi-step conversion of simple precursors into ergosterol, the principal sterol in fungal cell membranes. Ergosterol serves functions analogous to cholesterol in animal cells, maintaining membrane fluidity, integrity, and regulating membrane-bound enzyme activities. Many antifungal drugs target these enzymes to disrupt membrane function in fungi.
