Overview

Erythrocyte membrane transporters are a diverse group of integral membrane proteins expressed on the red blood cell plasma membrane, essential for the controlled exchange of ions (such as chloride, bicarbonate, sodium, potassium, and calcium), metabolites (such as glucose and nucleosides), and for the maintenance of cell homeostasis, including cell shape, volume, and redox status[1][2][6][7]. The most prominent among these is anion exchange protein 1 (AE1, SLC4A1 or Band 3), which mediates the exchange of chloride and bicarbonate across the erythrocyte membrane and is crucial for CO₂ transport and acid-base balance[1][2]. Others include glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1/SLC2A1), responsible for glucose uptake[5][6][9]; ATP-driven pumps such as Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase and plasma membrane Ca²⁺ ATPase; and various ABC transporters (e.g., ABCA1, ABCG2)[6]. Alterations or inherited defects in specific erythrocyte membrane transporters are associated with disease, including hereditary hemolytic anemias, metabolic disorders, and may impact susceptibility to infections such as malaria[1][6][7].
