Erythroid progenitor cells are a group of hematopoietic progenitors that serve as intermediates between multipotent stem cells and mature erythrocytes (red blood cells). They play a critical role in erythropoiesis, the process by which new red blood cells are produced, primarily within the bone marrow. These progenitors respond to physiological demands for increased red cell production, such as during anemia or hypoxia. Recent research highlights additional roles in immunomodulation, specifically in tumor progression by dampening anti-tumor immunity. EPCs are highly radiosensitive compared with other bone marrow populations.
