Target intelligence / Profile preview

Erythropoietin (EPO)

Target
EPO
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein hormone, Cytokine, Growth factor
01

Overview

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone primarily produced by the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. It binds to the erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) on erythroid progenitor cells, activating the JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway to promote their survival, proliferation, and differentiation. Recombinant forms of EPO are used therapeutically to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy, and other conditions.

02

Mechanism of action

Binds to erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) on erythroid progenitor cells, activating the JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway to promote survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors into mature red blood cells.
