Escherichia coli (E. coli)

Target
E. coli
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Gram-negative bacterium, Enterobacteriaceae
01

Overview

Escherichia coli is a gram-negative, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacterium commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms. While most strains are harmless and beneficial, certain serotypes can cause diarrheal diseases and other complications, particularly through the production of virulence factors like Shiga toxin. Its presence in water samples indicates fecal contamination. It's also a widely used model organism in molecular biology research.
