Escherichia coli F18ab fimbriae (F18ab)

Target
F18ab
Molecular classification
Fimbria, Adhesin, Surface protein
01

Overview

Escherichia coli F18ab fimbriae are surface structures expressed by certain strains of E. coli, particularly STEC strains. These fimbriae mediate bacterial adhesion to host intestinal cells, playing a crucial role in colonization and pathogenesis of edema disease in weaned piglets. They are often co-expressed with Shiga toxin 2e (Stx2e), which contributes to the vascular damage characteristic of the disease. The major subunit gene is fedA, and differentiation from the related F18ac variant can be achieved through molecular techniques like PCR-RFLP or sequencing of fedA. Flagella can also contribute to virulence during infection.
