Escherichia coli Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)

Target
LPS
Molecular classification
Lipopolysaccharide, Cell membrane component, Glycolipid
01

Overview

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), also known as endotoxin, is a major component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli. It is essential for bacterial viability and plays a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity and barrier function of the bacterial outer membrane. LPS is an amphipathic molecule composed of three main domains: Lipid A, Core Oligosaccharide and O Antigen. It is a key target for antimicrobial agents and a potent activator of the host immune system, leading to inflammation and potentially sepsis.
