Escherichia coli O-polysaccharide antigen

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Lipopolysaccharide component
01

Overview

The Escherichia coli O-polysaccharide antigen, or O-antigen, is a highly variable component of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) found on the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli. It consists of repeating oligosaccharide units, contributing to over 180 recognized serogroups. The O-antigen plays a critical role in bacterial virulence, aiding in immune evasion and resistance to complement-mediated killing and phagocytosis. It is also used in epidemiology for strain typing due to its high variability among strains.
