The target Escherichia coli surface antigens on strains Bov-13/Bov-14/Bov-15/Suis-21/J5 refers to a specific combination of bacterial immunogens used in veterinary vaccines, most notably Colisorb (Bioveta, a.s.). These antigens include fimbrial adhesins F4 (K88) from strain Suis-21, F5 (K99) from strain Bov-13, F6 (987P) from strain Bov-15, and F41 from strain Bov-14, along with the core lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from the J5 mutant strain (Veterinary Medicines Directorate, Product Information). Fimbrial antigens are critical for the attachment of enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) to the intestinal epithelium, which is the primary step in the pathogenesis of neonatal diarrhea or scours in calves and piglets (Nagy & Fekete, 2005, Veterinary Research). The J5 strain is a UDP-galactose-4-epimerase deficient mutant of E. coli O111:B4 that lacks the O-antigen side chain, exposing the conserved core LPS and Lipid A (Appelmelk et al., 1988, Journal of Medical Microbiology). This exposure allows for the induction of cross-reactive antibodies that provide protection against a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria, making it effective in preventing mastitis and systemic endotoxemia. In a therapeutic context, these antigens are the active substances in vaccines designed to induce passive immunity via colostrum or active immunity in the host. By targeting these surface molecules, the immune system can prevent bacterial colonization and neutralize the toxic effects of LPS during infection.
