Esophageal cancer-associated oncoprotein 1 (ESOC1) is an oncogenic methyltransferase that plays a critical role in the development and progression of esophageal cancer. It was identified through genome-wide expression profile analysis as being significantly upregulated in esophageal cancer tissues compared to normal esophageal mucosa. ESOC1 contains a S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferase domain and exhibits methyltransferase activity in vitro. Functional studies have shown that knockdown of ESOC1 expression using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) leads to a significant suppression of growth in esophageal cancer cell lines, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target. Furthermore, high expression of ESOC1 is associated with poor prognosis in patients with esophageal cancer, making it a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker. Research into ESOC1 is focused on understanding its specific substrates and the molecular pathways it modulates to promote tumorigenesis, as well as developing small molecule inhibitors to block its oncogenic activity.
